Sony

Sony – the transnational corporation with headquarters in Japan born in 1946. Today Sony Corporation is one of the operational divisions of the holding Sony Group. Sony is engaged into production of household and professional electronics, game consoles and other hi-tech production.

Sony was founded by Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka on May 7th, 1946. In the beginning it was called «Toke tsusin koge kabusiki kaysa» or shortly Tosuko, but Morita noticed that it is difficult for Americans to pronounce that word. The present name Sony appeared from the combination of Lathin “sonus” (sound) and English “sunny boys” («solar children»; the English version sonny-boys has got in Japanese the meaning «juvenile geniuses»); besides, Morita tried to find a word not present in any language of the world. Since in Japanese the word «sonny» means something unlucky, unsuccessful business, has been decided to leave just one letter n.

Here are some inventions of Sony: the first cassette player in Japan, the first transistor radio in the world, Betamax format, the first Walkman, discman, TV-tube trinitron, memory stick, digital 8, Playstation and e.c.
